Staatstheater Stuttgart (Stuttgart State Theatre), Stuttgart

The Stuttgart State Theatre (Staatstheater Stuttgart), located in Stuttgart, is a renowned multi-venue theater complex comprising the Oper Stuttgart (Opera Stuttgart), Stuttgarter Ballett (Stuttgart Ballet), and Schauspiel Stuttgart (Stuttgart Drama Theatre). These institutions reflect the rich cultural tapestry of Baden-Württemberg, the state to which the theater's name refers.

Originally constructed between 1909 and 1912, the complex was designed by the distinguished Munich architect Max Littmann, following his victory in a competition to design new royal theaters. Initially named the Königliche Hoftheater, it served as the royal theater of the Kingdom of Württemberg and featured two main spaces: the Grosses Haus (large house) and the Kleines Haus (small house).

In 1919, the theaters underwent a name change to Landestheater and were later renamed State Theatre. The Kleines Haus was tragically destroyed during World War II due to bombing. In its place now stands a new Kleines Haus, redesigned by Hans Volkart and inaugurated in 1962.

The Opera House, or Grosses Haus, is notable for being one of the few German opera houses that survived the World War II bombings. It underwent extensive restoration between 1982 and 1984 to return to its original grandeur. Today, the Opera House has a seating capacity of 1,404.

In 2001, a rebranding of the venue names took place, leading to the current designations of Opernhaus for the opera venue and Schauspielhaus for the drama theater. This historic complex continues to be a cornerstone of German theater and opera, attracting audiences with its rich programming and architectural beauty.
