State War Memorial, Perth

State War Memorial, Perth (must see)

The State War Memorial Precinct sits atop Mount Eliza, offering a commanding view of Perth Water. It features several significant elements, including the Cenotaph, Court of Contemplation, Flame of Remembrance, and Pool of Reflection. Annually, on 25 April, the Anzac Day dawn service draws a crowd of over 40,000 attendees, while another official service is held on 11 November for Remembrance Day.

The Cenotaph, unveiled on 24 November 1929 during Western Australia's Centenary, stands as a tribute to fallen soldiers. Designed by General Sir J. Talbot Hobbs, it was inaugurated by Governor Sir William Campion. Adjacent to it, the Court of Contemplation, unveiled on 6 November 1955 by Sir Charles Gairdner, provides a space for reflection. Additionally, the Flame of Remembrance and Pool of Reflection, unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II on 1 April 2000, serve as poignant symbols of remembrance.

Beneath the Cenotaph lies the roll of honour, commemorating servicemen and women from Western Australia who perished in various conflicts, including the Boer War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. In 2012, following some debate, the names of those who died in Iraq and Afghanistan were added to the memorial.

Throughout the park, visitors will find numerous memorials dedicated to specific battles, military units, prisoners of war, and other groups, each honoring their sacrifices and contributions.
