Statue of Queen Victoria, Brighton
The Statue of Queen Victoria in Brighton is a significant historical monument on the seafront at the bottom of Grand Avenue in Hove. This bronze statue, standing 13 feet (4.0 m) high on a substantial Aberdeen granite plinth, was sculpted by Thomas Brock, a renowned artist responsible for creating 14 statues of Queen Victoria, including the famous Victoria Memorial in London. The statue in Hove was the first of these to be completed after the Queen's death, having been unveiled on 9 February 1901, just a month after she passed away.
Commissioned for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, the statue was part of a broader effort to commemorate the 60th anniversary of her accession to the throne. The committee responsible for the memorial sought a large and imposing statue, resulting in a design where Victoria is depicted life-size, dressed in royal regalia with a crown, veil, orb, and scepter. The statue faces south, looking out to sea, and its plinth is adorned with four bronze panels that depict allegorical figures representing commerce, education, science, art, and the British Empire—each symbolizing the advancements made during her reign.
The plinth carries an inscription in Latin, which translates to "Victory of God, Queen of Britain, defender of the faith and the empire," along with a dedication noting its erection by the inhabitants of Hove to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.
