Steno Museum, Aarhus
The Steno Museum in Aarhus is dedicated to the exploration of science and medicine's rich histories. Situated in the southern part of the campus area of Aarhus University, the museum integrates seamlessly with the university's architecture, featuring characteristic gables and staggered building blocks adorned in yellow tiles. This design not only reflects the aesthetic of the university but also harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding landscape.
The museum features a southern-facing layout with three blocks surrounded by a circular brickwork medical herb garden, which houses about 400 medicinal plants in square beds. A diagonal stream of blue and green ceramic tiles enlivens the space with its fountains and pools. The northern side of the museum highlights circular motifs, particularly in the entrance and foyer, leading to a custom-designed planetarium on the first floor with lounge chairs and a vaulted screen, enhancing the viewing experience. Light colors and tiles throughout create a cohesive, inviting atmosphere.
The Steno Museum is not only about visual and architectural delight but also offers an interactive and educational experience. It houses scientific instruments and provides numerous engaging activities for both children and adults. Visitors can experiment with Galileo’s law of gravity, play with mirror images, and explore other interactive displays that make science accessible and fun.
The museum presents "Dear Body – Difficult Body," a special exhibition for 11-15 year-olds. This sensory experience challenges perceptions of shame and body image, featuring a heat-sensitive lounge that captures temporary body imprints and an interactive locker room installation addressing taboos around body image. Furthermore, the 'Honestly' installation offers a unique interactive experience where visitors can share body-related insecurities. These are then projected onto a giant human body model alongside other visitors' concerns, highlighting a communal experience of personal and often unspoken struggles.
