Sunda Kelapa, Jakarta

Sunda Kelapa is the historical port of Jakarta, situated at the estuary of the Ciliwung River in the Penjaringan District of North Jakarta. It was originally known as "Sunda Kalapa" (Sundanese for "Coconut of Sunda") and served as the principal harbor for the Sunda Kingdom. Today, this port has transitioned from its grand past to primarily serving "pinisi", the traditional two-masted wooden sailing ships that facilitate inter-island freight within the archipelago.

Despite its reduction in prominence, Sunda Kelapa remains a significant element of Jakarta’s maritime heritage and continues to be a vibrant part of the city. As the oldest port in Jakarta, it stands near the historic area of old Batavia, the name by which Jakarta was known during the Dutch colonial period. This area is rich in history with remnants such as the old Kasteel Batavia and an ancient fort, enhancing its charm as a tourist destination.

Although it functions on a smaller scale compared to modern ports, Sunda Kelapa retains a bustling atmosphere with porters and local traders actively moving goods similar to scenes from the 13th century. The port area is also a hub for travel photographers and history enthusiasts, drawn by the colorful, vintage appearance of the "pinisi" ships and the dynamic human activities that reflect centuries of maritime tradition.

Visitors to Sunda Kelapa can explore converted warehouse spaces that now house the Maritime Museum, which offers insights into the rich naval history of Indonesia. Additionally, the port is guarded by historical watchtowers and lighthouses, which add to the scenic and historical tapestry of the area. For a more immersive experience, tourists are encouraged to take small boat tours around the port, providing a unique perspective of this enduring historical landmark and its continuing role in Jakarta's development.
