Supreme Court Gardens, Perth
Supreme Court Gardens holds a notable place in the heart of Perth's central business district, encapsulating both the city's natural beauty and its historical evolution. This park, nestled within the bustling urban environment, offers a serene escape that belies its dynamic history and the significant transformations it has undergone.
Supreme Court Gardens originated when its current site was partly submerged under Perth Water, extending further north. In the late 1880s, this area, now the park, was significantly altered, with the river covering what is now part of the gardens. At the time, the southern vicinity of the original courthouse and the Supreme Court building housed police stables and the Waterside Police Station, crucial to the city's law enforcement.
A pivotal moment in the garden's history came in 1902, coinciding with the construction of a new Supreme Court building. This period saw the demolition of the police buildings and the reclamation of part of the river, paving the way for the creation of the Supreme Court Gardens. This transformation marked the beginning of the area's transition from a utilitarian space to one of aesthetic and recreational value. Over time, Supreme Court Gardens underwent significant changes for safety and accessibility.
The gardens have also served as a vibrant cultural hub, hosting numerous events and concerts, many of which are associated with the Perth International Arts Festival. This includes a longstanding tradition of art shows conducted annually by The West Australian newspaper, enriching the cultural fabric of Perth. Additionally, the orchestral shell, constructed and opened on 22 January 1956, became a landmark feature of the gardens until it was burnt down in the 1990s, marking a loss in the park's historical landscape.
