Tabernacle Church, Cardiff

Tabernacle Church, Cardiff

Tabernacle Church, located in The Hayes at the heart of Cardiff, is a prominent Welsh-language Baptist chapel. This historic building has been classified as a Grade II* listed structure, acknowledging its architectural and cultural significance. The original chapel was established on this site in 1821, underwent an enlargement in 1840, and saw a significant reconstruction between 1862 and 1865. These renovations were executed in the Italianate style by the local architect firm J. Hartland and Son.

The architectural layout of the Tabernacle features a façade that is set back from the main road, creating a forecourt enclosed by wrought iron railings and flanked by two gate pillars. The façade itself is structured into two generous stories and includes a stair tower at each corner, which adds to the building's grandeur. The front of the building showcases four large round-headed windows at the upper level and similarly styled doorways at ground level, with the main entrance being particularly prominent.

Internally, the chapel boasts a high-level gallery on all sides, supported by iron columns and featuring a wrought iron balustrade. The flat coffered ceiling is adorned with a large ceiling rose, enhancing the chapel's aesthetic appeal. A significant architectural feature is the large arch at the back of the interior space, which houses the organ and a wooden pulpit. The stained glass windows, particularly notable for their depiction of biblical scenes such as the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the River Jordan, were installed in 1928 as a tribute to the former minister, Charles Davies.

Tabernacle Church has been recognized for its architectural ambition and especially for its finely crafted interior, which led to its designation as a listed building in 1975. The building not only serves as a place of worship but also stands as a testament to the rich historical and cultural tapestry of Cardiff.
