Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, Cape Town (must see)
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is a cable car system that takes visitors on a short five-minute journey to the peak of Table Mountain in Cape Town. It's a highly popular tourist spot, attracting around one million visitors annually. In January 2019, they celebrated their 28 millionth visitor.
Situated at an altitude of 1,067 meters (3,501 feet), the upper cable station sits on the western edge of the Table Mountain plateau. From here, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Cape Town, Table Bay, Robben Island, and the Atlantic coastline. The upper station provides various amenities including guided walking tours, an audio tour, dining options at a café, and a wi-fi lounge.
The cableway, known as the "Rotair," was installed by Garaventa (Doppelmayr Garaventa Group) of Switzerland in 1997. Its design is modeled after the Titlis Rotair cableway in Engelberg, Switzerland. These new cars can accommodate up to 65 passengers, compared to the older cars which held 25. They operate on a double cable system, enhancing stability during windy conditions and reducing travel time to 4-5 minutes. Additionally, the floors of the cars rotate 360 degrees during the journey, offering passengers a panoramic view of the surroundings.
