Taipei Botanical Garden, Taipei
The Taipei Botanical Garden is situated within the Nanhai Academy on Nanhai Road in Zhongzheng District, Taipei. This expansive garden spans approximately 15 hectares and boasts a diverse collection of over 1,500 plant species.
Originally founded during the period of Japanese rule in 1921, the garden's roots trace back even further to its establishment in 1896. It is currently under the stewardship of the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute. In 1930, the garden housed 1,129 plant species, primarily serving as a hub for academic research and the natural sciences. However, World War II took its toll on the garden, causing it to fall into disrepair. Following the war, the garden underwent a revitalization effort, during which new plant species were introduced.
Today, the garden remains well-maintained and boasts an impressive collection of over 1,500 plant species. The garden is divided into 17 distinct districts, each showcasing a variety of plants. Additionally, the garden features nine ponds specifically designed to cultivate different types of plants. Within the botanical garden, there are two historically significant buildings. One is the Qing Dynasty era Guest House of Imperial Envoys, originally constructed in 1888 and later relocated to the garden. The other is a herbarium, which houses preserved plant specimens and associated data, serving as a valuable resource for scientific research.
