Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei
The Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM), established in 1983, plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting Taiwanese modern and contemporary art. This is achieved through a variety of activities, including hosting events, organizing exhibitions, overseeing the Taipei Biennial, and managing the Taiwan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
As the sole museum in Taipei dedicated to modern art, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum stands as one of the city's largest cultural institutions. It boasts 24 galleries, with the exhibits changing on a monthly basis. Additionally, the museum's exterior is adorned with captivating and imaginative sculptures. Notably, it was Taiwan's first purpose-built museum designed specifically for the display of modern and contemporary art.
Architecturally, the museum reflects the influence of the Japanese Metabolist Movement and was designed by the architect Kao Er-Pan. When observed from the vantage point of a passing subway, one can appreciate its striking and harmonious appearance. The central structure takes the form of a columnar-shaped streamlined acoustic resonance container, and the museum's X-site serves as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration between architecture and sound arts.
Since 2014, the square in front of the museum has been transformed into an experimental platform known as "X-site." This initiative focuses on fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration and seeks to explore new possibilities in the realm of the arts. Each year, a project is chosen to facilitate collaboration between architecture and the arts, with the aim of drawing attention to the interconnectedness of our environment and the arts.
