Taipei Grand Mosque, Taipei

Taipei Grand Mosque, Taipei

The Taipei Grand Mosque, also known as Taipei Zheng He Mosque, stands as Taiwan's most significant Islamic establishment and is both the largest and oldest mosque in the country. Situated in the Da'an District of Taipei City, it exemplifies Islamic architectural principles and Arabic design.

Architect Yang Cho-cheng, renowned for designing prominent landmarks like the Taipei Grand Hotel, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, National Theater and Concert Hall, among others in Taiwan, envisioned this magnificent structure.

The mosque features an impressive greenish-bronze domed roof, reaching a height of 15 meters with a diameter of 15 meters. Remarkably, it stands without the support of beams, featuring two Byzantium-style onion-shaped spires atop the dome. These spires are adorned with crescent decorations and iron railings.

Two minarets, each 20 meters in height, grace the mosque at both ends. These minarets possess a grey hue with a red-colored neck and onion-shaped spires atop them, showcasing a fusion of Taiwanese and Central Asian materials.

With a total area of 2,747 square meters, the Taipei Grand Mosque holds the distinction of being the largest mosque in Taiwan. Inside, a spacious prayer hall, measuring 15 meters in both height and width, adheres to Islamic traditions, featuring intricate geometric art on its windowpanes. It accommodates up to 1,000 worshippers and boasts exquisite handmade Persian rugs and chandeliers, gifts from allied nations.

Additional facilities include a reception hall, side arcades, administrative offices, library, reposing room, and ablution rooms. Notably, the mosque's front yard garden is graced by two Arabian date palm trees, adding to its serene ambiance.
