Taipei Zoo, Taipei
The Taipei Zoo is one of the leading city zoos globally and holds the title of being the largest in Southeast Asia, covering a vast area of 165 hectares. It proudly showcases a wide-ranging collection of more than 400 animal species, providing an enjoyable experience for visitors. The zoo features animals from various regions, including Taiwan, Australia, Africa, the Asian tropical rainforest, deserts, and temperate zones.
This zoo comprises seven indoor exhibits, each featuring distinct themes. For instance, the Insectarium introduces visitors to several butterfly species unique to Taiwan. Additionally, you won't want to miss the immensely popular Koala House and Penguin House. Furthermore, there are two giant pandas from China, considered the zoo's resident celebrities, making them a must-see attraction.
Formerly, the zoo's most prominent figure was the Asian Elephant known as "Grandpa Lin Wang," who remarkably lived to the ripe old age of 86. Lin's longevity, surpassing that of most Asian Elephants by 20 years, was regarded as a miraculous feat by zoologists. Following his passing, Lin was taxidermied and placed on exhibit, earning him the distinction of being the world's largest stuffed Asian Elephant. You can view him on display at the Education Center.
In addition to the indoor exhibits, the Taipei Zoo offers eight outdoor exhibit areas, categorized according to different geographical environments. These areas serve both as educational displays and ecological environments. The "Children's Zoo," "Formosan Animal Area," and "African Animal Area" are particularly popular, as determined by internet voting. Notably, the Formosan Animal Area showcases endemic species such as the Formosan sika deer, Taiwan macaque, and Swinhoe's pheasant, which are unique to Taiwan and certainly worth exploring.
Why You Should Visit:
Very large variety of animals on display; extremely cheap admission prices but not nearly as sad as other zoos; great for children; lots of snack shops and toilets available.
Tip:
One can go immediately to the entrance gates and use an EasyCard for the entrance fee to skip the lines at the ticket counters.
Some indoor exhibits in the zoo (including the Panda House) may close on Monday, therefore go on other days.
Hippo Cafe (restaurant area) at the African Safari has the most food options available – perfect for lunch.
