Taras Shevchenko Monument, Lviv

The Taras Shevchenko Monument stands as one of Lviv’s most prominent public landmarks, dedicated to the 19th-century poet, artist, and national figure whose work became central to Ukrainian cultural identity. Set within the park zone of the Halytskyi District, the monument occupies a lively stretch of the avenue where residents and visitors regularly pass through.

The monument is composed of two interconnected parts: a 4.5-metre bronze statue of Shevchenko and a striking 12-metre bronze stele rising behind it. Known as the “Wave of National Revival,” the stele mirrors the themes of Shevchenko’s poetry and Ukraine’s modern rebirth. The statue itself rests on a granite pedestal, presenting the poet in a confident stance that highlights his role as both cultural creator and national symbol.

Its construction reflects a period of renewed independence and public involvement. The statue was completed in 1992, marking Ukraine’s first day of independence, while the decorative stele was added in 1996. The project, funded through nationwide public contributions, was overseen by the Ukrainian Public Committee. Sculptors Andriy and Volodymyr Sukhorski created the statue in Argentina, while the architectural work was carried out by Yuriy Dyba and Yuriy Kromey.
