Tashkent House of Photography, Tashkent

The Tashkent House of Photography (THP) stands as a vibrant cultural hub in the heart of Tashkent. Located on Istiqlol Street, this architectural masterpiece is not only a gallery but also a symbol of Uzbekistan's rich history and evolving art scene.

Built in 1934 by renowned Uzbek architects K. Babievsky and A. Petelin, with input from ethnographer and artist W. Rozvadovsky, the building is an architectural gem. Its design draws inspiration from medieval architecture, featuring a grand facade adorned with blue tiles and a stunning carved door created by master woodcarvers Usto Gafuri Khodji Ashur and Raufi Yakub. The spacious exhibition hall spans over 1,500 square meters, with office spaces situated above the elegant arch tympan. Despite damage from a devastating earthquake in the 1960s, the building was meticulously restored to preserve its legacy for future generations.

The Tashkent House of Photography showcases 130 years of Uzbek photographic artistry, starting with the nation’s first photo in 1879. Its exhibits capture the essence of Uzbek life, blending form and emotion. Hosting exhibitions, seminars, and the renowned biennial "TashkentAle," the gallery also shares its cultural treasures globally through collaborations in Paris, Germany, Japan, and South Korea.

In addition to exhibitions, the Tashkent House of Photography supports emerging talent through competitions, workshops, and its studio school of photographic art. Renowned photographers and professionals from countries such as Germany, France, and Romania frequently conduct masterclasses, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and techniques.

The Tashkent House of Photography is a vibrant cultural hub, showcasing contemporary works by leading Uzbek and international photographers. A cornerstone of Tashkent's art scene, it celebrates photography while bridging the past, present, and future.
