Tašmajdan Park, Belgrade
Located in the heart of Belgrade, at the intersection of major streets and boulevards, Tašmajdan Park stands as a verdant oasis amidst the urban hustle. It is one of the most famous parks in Belgrade, cherished by locals seeking relaxation and enjoyment among its trees and wildlife. This park is not only notable for its natural beauty and expansive size but also for its rich and storied history.
The area now known as Tašmajdan Park has been significant since Roman times. The Romans recognized the potential of this stone-rich site, exploiting it for construction materials. Many of Belgrade’s older buildings were constructed using stone from Tašmajdan’s quarry. The name "Tašmajdan" itself is derived from Turkish, where "taş" means stone and "majdan" means mine. The catacombs created by extensive quarrying were later repurposed as military warehouses.
Several historical events have left their mark on Tašmajdan. It is believed to be the site where the relics of Saint Sava were burned. Additionally, it once served as a cemetery before it was relocated to the New Cemetery. In 1835, the Church of Saint Mark was constructed in the park, only to be destroyed during the bombing of World War II. The new Church of Saint Mark, built nearby, survived and remains one of Belgrade’s landmarks today.
Tašmajdan Park is a favorite spot for Belgraders seeking leisure and outdoor activities. The park is easily accessible, filled with lush greenery, and features several bars and restaurants with terraces overlooking the park and its historical quarry.
The park is well-equipped for visitors of all ages. There are playgrounds for children and tables for playing chess, making it a popular destination for families. Key attractions within the park include the Church of Saint Mark and a smaller Russian church nestled behind it. A notable addition is the monument to Patriarch Pavle, erected in 2018 on the plateau in front of the church.
