Teatro de Verano Ramon Collazo (Ramón Collazo Summer Theater), Montevideo

The Ramón Collazo Summer Theater (Teatro de Verano Ramón Collazo) in Montevideo is a cornerstone of cultural performance in the city, boasting a strategic location in the Rodó Park neighborhood facing the picturesque Rambla. It is an open-air theater renowned for its distinctive architecture and excellent acoustics, making it a significant venue for national and international events. The theater was named after Ramón Collazo, a renowned Uruguayan pianist and composer, as a tribute to his contributions to the carnival scene.

This historic amphitheater was commissioned in the 1950s by architect Julio Giacosa. His design focused on ensuring unobstructed stage views and superior acoustics by incorporating a unique interior cone within a dome-shaped metal roof. Construction began in 1954 and concluded with the theater's inauguration on February 10, 1956. This opening coincided with the launch of the Municipal Cylinder and the 1st National Production Exhibition, celebrated with a concert by the Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Carlos Estrada.

By 2005, Montevideo's theater showed significant wear, leading to extensive refurbishments by the city. These renovations modernized technical equipment and repaired the original structure. In 2006, architect Carlos Pascual redesigned the theater, introducing a new dome engineered by Eladio Dieste, completed in December with its debut during a Murga Madre performance.

The Ramón Collazo Summer Theater remains an iconic venue in Montevideo, regularly hosting the official Uruguayan Carnival contest and drawing a broad array of artists and audiences, thereby reinforcing its status as a cultural hub in Uruguay.
