Teatro Principal, Valencia

Teatro Principal, Valencia

Main Theatre of València (Teatro Principal) stands as Valencia's pioneering architectural marvel, embodying the modern ideals of performance viewing. Originally conceived by the esteemed Italian architect Fontana in 1775, its construction faced delays until the early 19th century. Initially designed with three floors, a fourth level was later added to enhance its grandeur. The splendid facade, crafted by José Camaña in 1854, perfectly complements the Rococo-style interior, adorned with exquisite paintings by Camarón.

While Valencia boasted several theaters and farce houses since the 16th century, the Main Theatre emerged as the first embodiment of the contemporary theater concept. Fontana's visionary blueprint laid the foundation in 1775, yet its construction did not commence until the turn of the 19th century, due to disruptions caused by the French invasion. Eventually, the theater saw its grand inauguration in 1831. Originally featuring three stories, the structure witnessed further expansion when a fourth floor was ingeniously added without dismantling the roof, utilizing jacks to elevate it.

During the 19th century, the Main Theatre captivated Valencian society, becoming a favored venue for both witnessing and being seen. Wealthy families flocked to the theater, occupying their exclusive subscription boxes. The theater's vibrant repertoire during this era encompassed theatrical performances, musical concerts, opera, operettas, zarzuelas, and the highly anticipated carnival masked ball.
