Terazije, Belgrade

Terazije, Belgrade

Terazije serves as a central square in Belgrade, extending from the famed Prince Mihailov (Knez Mihailova) Street. It is encircled by architectural marvels from diverse periods, notably dominated by the hotels Balkan and Moskva, and the secessionist gem, the Albania Palace. Constructed in the 1930s, the Albania Palace was once the tallest building in the Balkans. Additional classical edifices, including the Atina, Igumanova, Krsmanovića (Protokol), and Asikuracioni Generali palaces, enhance the square’s noble ambiance.

The square is known for its extensive network of underground passageways and shopping centers, and it is bustling with shops, cafes, and restaurants, making it a lively hub in the city. The name is Terazije translates to "scales," commonly referred to as “water balances”, which links back to an ancient water distribution mechanism connected to Roman aqueducts pre-Ottoman era. These "water balances" were tower-like structures designed to maintain water pressure and distribute water to elevated neighborhoods, crucial for the city’s water supply system.

Historically, Terazije has been the site of significant events and institutions. The old Hotel Kasina rebuilt in 1922, hosted the National Assembly of Serbia in 1918 and various plays of the National Theatre in Belgrade until 1920. The Hotel Moskva, constructed in 1906 and renowned for its distinctive ceramic tile façade, remains a preserved icon of Belgrade's architectural heritage.

The Palace Albania, a notable landmark, was the first high-rise in Belgrade and the tallest building in the Balkans before World War II. Additionally, the square boasts the largest McDonald’s restaurant in the Balkans. The Theatre on Terazije, akin to Broadway, stages numerous musical productions and has been modernized as recently as 2005.
