The Biological Museum, Turku
The Biological Museum in Turku, founded in 1907, is housed in a charming Art Nouveau building designed by architect Alex Nystrom. Its 13 dioramas vividly depict Finnish fauna and flora, from the coastal landscapes of the Turku archipelago to the rugged fells of Lapland. Visitors can explore scenes featuring 30 species of common Finnish mammals and over 140 bird species, offering an immersive journey through Finland’s diverse ecosystems.
The museum’s origins trace back to a donation by Alfred and Helene Jacobsson, inspired by their visit to Stockholm's biological museum. The exhibits, created by taxidermist Gustaf Kolthoff and his son Kjell, have remained largely unchanged since the museum’s opening. The Kolthoffs not only prepared the animals but also painted the diorama backgrounds.
In addition to its permanent displays, the museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions and nature-themed events, making it a popular destination for families, school groups, and nature enthusiasts. The Biological Museum has maintained its original character for over a century, offering both historical and educational value to its visitors.
