The Carpenter Theater, Richmond

The Carpenter Theater, Richmond

The Carpenter Theatre at Dominion Energy Center, nestled in the Arts and Cultural District of downtown Richmond, is a beacon of historic and artistic grandeur. Originally designed for the Loew’s Theater Corporation and opened in 1928, this venue has been meticulously restored to blend its rich history with modern enhancements. Today, it serves as a home to nine Richmond-based performing arts groups, encompassing a wide range of genres such as theatre, folklore, ballet, orchestral music, jazz, and opera.

The theater itself, a cornerstone of the Dominion Energy Center, boasts a large stage equipped with state-of-the-art lighting and world-class acoustics that preserve its Old World charm. The renovation has not only updated its technical capabilities but also enhanced its aesthetic appeal, including a midnight sky ceiling adorned with twinkling fiber optic stars and 20 dressing rooms, making it an ideal venue for performers.

Visitors to the Carpenter Theatre can enjoy the ambiance of its main lobby, which features two refreshment bars, a concierge station, and a gift shop, with additional refreshment options available upstairs. The decor highlights four large mosaic tile murals of parrots, paying homage to the theater's long-standing tradition, including a handmade parrot decoration that has been a fixture since its opening day. With nearly 1,800 seats and a ceiling that mimics a starlit night, the Carpenter Theatre provides a mesmerizing experience, combining historical elements with contemporary conveniences.
