The Murphy Building, Indianapolis

The Murphy Building, Indianapolis

The Murphy Building, affectionately referred to as "The Murphy," is a historic structure that has become a cornerstone of Indianapolis' vibrant Fountain Square District. Built in 1884, the building is located at 1043 Virginia Avenue and has a storied past that adds depth to its current artistic and cultural significance.

Originally, the Murphy Building consisted of separate structures that were unified in 1951 to serve as a part of the now-defunct G.C. Murphy five-and-dime store chain. This consolidation marked an era when the building served as a hub for affordable retail, a role it fulfilled until the chain’s eventual closure.

Today, the Murphy Building has been revitalized as the Murphy Art Center, an eclectic arts hub. The center boasts five galleries, 23 artist studios, and a mix of creative and cultural businesses, including a supplier of art materials, an Italian restaurant, an English pub, and a unique salon/gallery combination. This blend of offerings makes it a vibrant space for both art enthusiasts and the local community.

In addition to its artistic endeavors, the building is home to MOKB Presents, an Indianapolis-based live music promotion company, and their popular venue, The HIFI, which has become a sought-after location for concerts and events.

The Murphy Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, underscoring its historical and architectural importance. This designation not only preserves the building’s legacy but also cements its role as a beacon of culture and creativity in Indianapolis.

Whether you’re exploring its galleries, attending a live performance, or simply enjoying its dining options, the Murphy Building captures the spirit of Fountain Square—dynamic, historic, and unapologetically artistic.
