The Newark Public Library, Newark

Established from the Newark Library Association's efforts, which began in 1847, the library transitioned to a free public institution in 1889 following public approval in 1887. The main branch, located on Washington Street, is an architectural highlight inspired by the 15th-century Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, Italy. Designed by John Hall Rankin and Thomas M. Kellogg, the building was intended to serve multiple cultural functions, including a museum, lecture hall, and gallery. Its design features an impressive center court with arches and mosaics leading up to a stained-glass ceiling, enhancing its role as both a cultural hub and a library.
