The Post of Morocco, Rabat

The Post of Morocco, Rabat

The Post of Morocco's general office in Rabat stands as an architectural gem on the corner of Avenue Mohammed V and Soekarno Street. Designed by Adrien Laforgue and Albert Laprade, this elegant white building was completed in 1918, reflecting the modern Moroccan architectural style. Above its grand entrance, a prominent clock adds to the structure’s distinctive charm. The building’s impressive façade and historical significance make it a landmark in Rabat, drawing the attention of both locals and visitors.

Avenue Mohammed V, formerly known as Cours Lyautey during the French Protectorate, is a central artery of downtown Rabat. Developed mainly between 1915 and 1932, it hosts several significant buildings, including the Ministry of Post and Telegraph and the Bank Al-Maghrib. Within the Ministry of Post and Telegraph building lies the Postal Museum, founded in 1970, which has since become a hub for philatelists from around the world.

The Postal Museum showcases Moroccan stamps, historic envelopes, and early communication devices like the Bodo car, a telegraph ribbon printer, and belinographs. Visitors can trace postal history through vintage vans and see Morocco’s first official stamp, issued on May 12, 1912, depicting the Aisaoua Mosque in Tangier.

More than just a functional postal center, the Post of Morocco in Rabat is a symbol of the country's historical and technological evolution in communication. Its location on one of the city's most prominent avenues, combined with its architectural elegance and rich museum collection, solidifies its role as an essential part of Rabat’s cultural and historical landscape.
