The Statue of Simon Stevin, Brugge
The Statue of Simon Stevin, situated on Simon Stevin Square (Simon Stevinplein) in Bruges honors the renowned Bruges-born mathematician known for his contributions to understanding the law of equilibrium on an inclined plane. The statue stands prominently in the square, encapsulating the deep historical and cultural significance of Stevin's work and his legacy in Bruges.
Crafted from bronze, the statue depicts Simon Stevin atop a plinth constructed from Belgian bluestone, with the entire monument reaching a height of 3 meters. The statue was commissioned by The Bruges City Corporation and the provincial government of West Flanders and was erected in 1839.
The installation of the statue was not without controversy. Initially, it faced opposition from many local Catholics, while the liberal segment of the population supported it vigorously, eventually succeeding in its installation. The inauguration of the statue was scheduled for July 26, 1846. However, due to delays in the completion of the actual bronze statue, a plaster replica was unveiled on the planned date. The true statue, sculpted by the Belgian artist Louis Eugene Simonis, was finally placed a year later.
Today, the area around the statue is bustling with life, surrounded by numerous shops and cafes. Simon Stevinplein has become a beloved tourist destination, drawing visitors who appreciate both its vibrant atmosphere and its historical depth. The Statue of Simon Stevin remains a focal point in the square, symbolizing the intersection of scientific achievement and cultural heritage in Bruges.
