The Viking Triangle, Waterford (must see)

The Waterford Viking Triangle, a historic area enclosed by ancient Viking walls dating back over a millennium, offers visitors a captivating glimpse into Ireland's past. This compact district, located just a short walk from the city's shopping hub, is rich in history and culture. At its center stands Reginald's Tower, the oldest urban civic building in the country, now serving as a museum filled with Viking artifacts. The tower is a significant symbol of the city's heritage and provides a window into the Viking era.

Outside Reginald’s Tower, the impressive Vadrafjordr, a 40ft Viking longboat with a striking red sail, captures the attention of visitors. This vessel, crafted by local artisans from diverse trades, is a remarkable example of traditional craftsmanship. Made from Irish oak sourced from Carlow and sailcloth woven with polyester, the longboat echoes the design of Viking ships discovered in Denmark, particularly the Skuldelev 2 ship, which originated from Dublin around 1042-1043 AD. The creation of Vadrafjordr, supported by an Irish State agency, not only preserves historical heritage but also promotes traditional skills among the community.

In addition to the longboat, the Viking Triangle is home to another significant artifact: the world's longest wooden sword sculpture, located on Bailey’s New Street. This 15-meter sculpture, carved from a single tree, intricately depicts Waterford's rich history, adding to the city's unique cultural landscape. Both the sword and the longboat serve as powerful symbols of Waterford's enduring connection to its Viking roots, inviting visitors to explore its intriguing past.

The Viking Triangle also features the Medieval Museum and the Bishop's Palace Museum, collectively known as the Waterford Museum of Treasures.
