Theatre of Musical Comedy, Baku
The Azerbaijan State Theatre of Musical Comedy, a cornerstone of Azerbaijan's cultural scene, was established in Baku at the dawn of the 20th century, signifying a major development in the Azerbaijani arts. The foundation for this prestigious institution was laid with the premiere of Uzeyir Hajibeyov's musical comedy "Husband and Wife" on May 24, 1910, staged initially in a circus building owned by the Nikitin brothers. This performance initiated the Azerbaijani national musical comedy genre and led to the establishment of the Azerbaijan State Theatre of Musical Comedy.
By 1938, a specialized theatre for musical comedy with distinct Azerbaijani and Russian sections was established, gaining official status in September of that year. In 1939, it premiered significant productions like S. Rustamov's "Bride for 5 Manats," and other notable works including A. Mashadibeyov's "The Married Bachelor," and S. Hajibeyov's "Roza."
Throughout the 1940s, the theatre solidified its place in Azerbaijan's cultural life, showcasing a variety of performances that included both local creations and international classics like Franz Lehár's "Blue Mazurka" and Imre Kálmán's "The Circus Princess."
However, the theatre faced challenges during the period from 1988 to 1992 due to the absence of a dedicated building and the socio-political upheavals in the nascent Republic of Azerbaijan. Despite these obstacles, the theatre experienced a resurgence in a new venue, staging contemporary pieces like "If Not That One, Then This One" and "Everyone Has His Star," which reflected the evolving tastes and artistic explorations of the time.
Today, the Azerbaijan State Theatre of Musical Comedy continues to be a vibrant part of Azerbaijan's theatrical landscape, contributing significantly to the preservation and evolution of the musical comedy genre that was pioneered by Uzeyir Hajibeyov, whose visionary works laid the groundwork for a rich tradition of Azerbaijani musical theatre.
