Theatre of Youth, Buffalo

Theatre of Youth, Buffalo

Theatre of Youth (TOY) is a beloved cultural institution in Buffalo, offering dynamic, professionally produced theatre experiences designed especially for young audiences. Founded in 1972 by Daemen College instructors Rosalind Cramer and Toni Smith Wilson, TOY began as a grassroots initiative and has since grown into a cornerstone of the city’s arts community, drawing more than 30,000 children each season.

TOY is committed to inspiring imagination, nurturing creativity, and enhancing education through live theatre. Productions are carefully crafted to be child-centered, inclusive, and reflective of the Buffalo community. The company features both adult and youth performers in a variety of shows ranging from drama and comedy to dance and interactive storytelling. At its core, TOY believes that early engagement with the arts helps build confidence, empathy, and a lasting appreciation for creative expression.

The theatre is housed in the historic Allendale Theatre, located in Buffalo’s vibrant Allentown neighborhood. Built in 1913 in a Neo-Classical Revival style, the Allendale originally hosted vaudeville performances before transitioning into a cinema. After closing in 1982 during a period of economic downturn, the building sat vacant until its revival in 1999. Today, TOY occupies the venue, maintaining its architectural charm while breathing new life into its stage with award-winning set and costume designs.

Whether you're a lifelong Buffalonian or a first-time visitor, the Theatre of Youth offers an enchanting space where creativity takes center stage-and where the curtain always rises on wonder.
