Theresienwiese, Munich

Theresienwiese is an open area located in the Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt district of Munich. This space serves as the official venue for the Munich Oktoberfest. Covering an expansive area of 420,000 square meters (approximately 4,500,000 square feet), it is bounded on the west side by the Ruhmeshalle (Hall of Fame) and the Bavaria statue, representing the State of Bavaria. On the eastern side, it is bordered by Esperantoplatz, a square named after the international language Esperanto. This square features a memorial dedicated to the victims of the 1980 Oktoberfest bombing. Access to Theresienwiese is provided by Bavariaring, a circular road that accommodates visitor traffic. In the northern direction, you can see the towers of Saint Paul.

The name "Theresienwiese" is derived from Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, the spouse of Crown Prince Ludwig I. Their wedding took place on a meadow outside the city walls in the year 1810 ("Wiese" means "meadow" in German), and this location was subsequently named "Theresienwiese" in her honor. Since then, the Oktoberfest has been celebrated annually to commemorate this historical event. In addition to Oktoberfest, there are other events held at Theresienwiese, including a spring festival and a winter festival known as "Winter Tollwood." Furthermore, a large flea market, one of Germany's biggest, is held at this location every April.
