Tiroler Museumsbahnen (Tyrolean Museum Railways), Innsbruck
The Tyrolean Museum Railways (Tiroler MuseumsBahnen - TMB) is an important railway organization based in Innsbruck. Its main goal is to preserve and document the historical local railway lines of Tyrol and the trains associated with them. Established in May 1983, the TMB was formed to protect the aging railbuses of the Stubai Valley Railway (Stubaitalbahn), which were about to be retired after 79 years of service. The society aimed to save these valuable historical vehicles for future generations, recognizing the significance of this period in Tyrol's rail heritage.
The creation of TMB came at a critical time when the region's railway heritage faced the risk of being lost. Despite initial challenges, such as finding a suitable location for the society's activities, TMB received strong support from political figures, notably the then-mayor Nischer. With this backing, TMB secured premises including the former locomotive depot and parts of the Stubaital station.
Within just two years of its founding, by the summer of 1985, TMB achieved a significant milestone with the opening of the Localbahn Museum. This accomplishment not only marked a key moment in the preservation of Tyrol's railway history but also established TMB as a vital institution in the cultural and historical landscape of the region. Thanks to its dedication and support from political and community stakeholders, Tyrolean Museum Railways has ensured that Tyrol's local railway history and its rolling stock are celebrated and remembered.
