Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, Tokyo

In October 1990, the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, established by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, opened its doors. Its primary aim is to foster art and culture in the community and encourage its global expansion. This is achieved by showcasing high-quality music, theatre, opera, and dance programs. The facility includes a Concert Hall, acoustically tailored for classical music and featuring one of the largest pipe organs globally, as well as the Playhouse, Theatre East, and Theatre West for plays and dance shows. Additionally, the theatre is equipped with exhibition areas, various-sized meeting rooms, and rehearsal spaces. These facilities support a range of cultural activities, from art displays to educational workshops, beyond just stage performances.

The theatre is renowned for its diverse musical events, especially those highlighting the impressive pipe organ. Collaborations with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo, facilitate regular classical music concerts. A popular attraction is the "Theatre Opera," offering unique semi-staged opera experiences.

Emphasizing its role as a cultural hub, the theatre not only produces original plays but also partners with external organizations for high-caliber artistic events. In July 2009, Hideki Noda, a leading figure in Japan's theatre scene, became the first artistic director, enhancing the theatre's creative and project quality. Under Noda's leadership, the theatre presents a broad spectrum of works, from modern interpretations of classic pieces to innovative performances that defy traditional genres.
