Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, Tokyo

The Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium is a sports facility located in Tokyo. It was initially constructed in 1954 to host the World Wrestling Championship. Over the years, it has served as the venue for gymnastics during the 1964 Summer Olympics and hosted the table tennis competition during the 2020 Summer Olympics. Notably, the gymnasium underwent a futuristic redesign by renowned architect Fumihiko Maki, a recipient of the Pritzker Prize, between 1986 and 1990.

Situated in Sendagaya, Shibuya-ku, adjacent to Sendagaya Station within the outer precincts of Meiji Shrine, this facility harmoniously blends with its park-like environment. Its architectural design incorporates various outdoor spaces and offers a diverse range of architectural styles. The main arena, sub arena, and indoor pool buildings maintain their distinct identities as large structures while also creating welcoming outdoor spaces for the public. These architectural elements create a 'collective form,' shaping evolving silhouettes with changing perspectives.

Since the year 2000, the gymnasium has also been used as a concert venue. The sub-arena features an Olympic-sized swimming pool (50 meters by 20 meters, with eight lanes) and can accommodate up to 900 spectators. It serves as the venue for the Japan Waterpolo Championships. Additionally, the facility includes a 25-meter pool (25 meters by 13 meters, with six lanes), an outdoor oval running track, a weight training room, and conference rooms.
