Tomba di Caecilia Metella (Tomb of Caecilia Metella), Rome

For countless centuries, this iconic landmark has attracted visitors from far and wide, standing as one of the most intact ancient Roman tombs in existence. Originally one among several circular mausoleums adorning the Appian Way, this particular tomb, while smaller in size compared to the Mausoleum of Augustus, remains truly impressive. It served as the final resting place for a Roman noblewoman, the wife of Crassus' son, a formidable rival of Julius Caesar and infamous for being associated with the term "crass" in English.

Adorned with an original frieze featuring bulls' skulls near its upper section, the tomb underwent transformations in the 14th century by the Caetani family, who elevated its travertine stone walls and added medieval-style crenellations, effectively turning it into a fortress.

Adjacent to the tomb, a small museum showcases the geological history of the surrounding area.

Tip:
Entrance to this site also grants access to the magnificent Villa dei Quintili, although you can still enjoy a spectacular view without venturing inside.
