Tramshed, Cardiff
Tramshed in Cardiff is a distinctive music and arts venue housed in a historical building originally used as a tram depot. This Grade II-listed structure, located in the suburb of Grangetown, was part of Cardiff’s tramway system serving as the terminus for the city's western trams from 1902 until 1946 and later for the trolleybus service until 1953. The building, notable for its red brick construction and eleven brick gables each featuring a louvred oculus and two semi-circular windows, became a listed property in 1997 due to its rarity as a large, surviving structure from a significant tramway network.
After tram and trolley services ended, the depot was used as Cardiff Council's vehicle maintenance workshop. In 2013, the council moved these services and listed the building for sale, initiating a transformative phase. By November 2014, the council was negotiating its redevelopment into an arts center. The project, led by TShed with designs by Ellis Williams Architects, aimed to create a diverse arts venue featuring a gallery, dance studios, work units, conference facilities, and a music venue with a capacity for 1,000 people.
Tramshed officially opened its doors in October 2015. The venue now features a mix of artistic and commercial spaces, including 30 live/work units that were slated for completion in Spring 2016. It is a vibrant community hub known as Tramshed Tech, fostering creative and technological collaborations. This facility was officially inaugurated by Wales' First Minister, Carwyn Jones, in September 2016. Despite its large capacity, the venue limits its maximum capacity events to six times per year, preserving its unique historical and architectural integrity while serving as a dynamic center for arts and culture in Cardiff.
