Trier City Museum, Trier
The Trier City Museum, located in the historic Simeonstift near the iconic Porta Nigra, offers a remarkable journey through Trier’s art and culture from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Established in the former Saint Simeon's Collegiate Church, this museum preserves an extraordinary array of artifacts that reflect the city’s rich heritage. The permanent collection, founded on generous donations from Trier’s citizens, spans over 1,000 square meters, featuring items from everyday life, religious artifacts, and works of fine art.
The museum’s sections are diverse: visitors encounter paintings, sculptures, Coptic textiles, East Asian figurines, and even the original Tietz statues from Trier’s Palace Garden. Highlights include models depicting Trier circa 1800 and after WWII bombings, the throne of Archbishop Johann Philipp von Walderdorff, and a large painting of Trebeta, Trier’s legendary founder. The Red Hall immerses guests in the city’s history, while the Trebeta Hall presents a dramatic depiction of Trier’s founding. The museum also houses temporary exhibitions showcasing local artists and exploring themes relevant to Trier’s contemporary social fabric.
Interactive areas, media stations, and a cinema screening of 80 short films—from Trier’s development to testimonies from Holocaust survivors—allow visitors to deepen their engagement. The cloister and on-site restaurant provide ideal spaces for reflection after an enriching exploration of Trier’s 2,000-year history, offering a memorable experience for all ages.
