Tropical World, Leeds
Tropical World, nestled within the scenic Canal Gardens of Roundhay Park in Leeds, stands as a premier butterfly house and zoological attraction. Established originally in 1911 as the Coronation House, this conservatory was reconstructed in 1939 and underwent a significant modernization in 1984, culminating in its rebranding as Tropical World in 1988. It bears the distinction of holding the largest collection of tropical plants outside Kew Gardens and is a proud member of BIAZA.
The facility was renamed in 2008 to The Arnold and Marjorie Ziff Tropical World, in recognition of the financial support from Arnold Ziff and his wife Marjorie. A transformative refurbishment was completed in 2015, enhancing the aquarium with an Aztec theme and introducing a plethora of new species, alongside the addition of a new cafe.
Tropical World offers a captivating journey through various climate-controlled glass houses, each meticulously designed to replicate different tropical environments globally. The adventure begins in the butterfly zone where visitors are greeted by free-flying butterflies in a swamp-like setting, alongside terrapins and koi in the ponds, and Morelet's crocodiles in their enclosures.
Visitors first explore an Aztec-themed aquarium with species like poison dart frogs, axolotls, clownfish, and more. Next is a rainforest floor with a waterfall, tropical fish, and butterflies, leading to a reptile display of snakes and iguanas. A canopy house features free-flying parrots and tamarins, connected to a desert habitat with meerkats and tortoises. The tour concludes in a nocturnal house with bats, armadillos, and various nocturnal animals.
Enhancing the visitor experience, a cafe offers picturesque views of the Canal Gardens, and a well-stocked gift shop awaits at the entrance, making Tropical World a must-visit destination for those keen to explore the wonders of tropical fauna and flora.

Leeds Introduction Walking Tour

In the 5th century the once forested area of Leeds was part of the Brythonic kingdom of Elmet. The Venerable Bede called it "Loidis." In Welsh it was "lloed", "a place." At any rate, "Leeds."
