Turku Synagogue, Turku

Turku Synagogue, Turku

The Turku Synagogue, located in the VII District of Turku, stands as one of the two synagogues in the country. This Ashkenazi synagogue, designed by architects Eskil Hinderson and August Krook, was completed in 1912. The building is a striking example of Neo-Romanesque architecture, with influences from Art Nouveau and Byzantine Revival styles, reflecting the architectural trends of the time.

The synagogue’s two-story structure, distinguished by its domed cupola and yellow-brick facade, continues to serve the Jewish community in Turku, despite the declining number of practicing members. Historically, the Jewish presence in Turku dates back to the 19th century, with the community being officially recognized even before Finland gained independence from Russia in 1917. The synagogue was built on land donated by the city in 1900 and opened six years before Jews were granted citizenship.

Next to the synagogue is a community center, built in 1956, which once catered to a much larger congregation. While the community has since dwindled, the synagogue remains an important cultural and historical landmark, with Sabbath services still being held.
