Ueno Park, Tokyo (must see)

Ueno Park, situated in the heart of Tokyo, is a vast green area with a rich history. It was once an integral part of the opulent and majestic Kanei Ji Temple, which served as the familial religious center for the Tokugawa Shogunate. Unfortunately, the temple suffered extensive damage during the Boshin Civil War, leading to the Shogunate's downfall and the restoration of the emperor's authority.

The transformation of Ueno Park into a public recreational space began in 1873. This transition was made possible through an imperial land grant from Emperor Taisho in 1924, officially designating it as Ueno Onshi Koen, or Ueno Imperial Gift Park. Within its bounds, you can find various significant Tokyo Museums, monuments honoring statesmen, as well as remnants of the original Kan'ei-ji temple complex.

Ueno Park is particularly renowned as the premier destination for cherry blossom viewing in Tokyo. During March and April, the park's central pathway is adorned with over a thousand cherry trees that burst into bloom, attracting a multitude of Hanami gatherings and cherry blossom viewing parties. Additionally, in July, a portion of the Shinobazu pond within the park becomes adorned with lotus blooms. Each year, the Natsu Matsuri, a lively summer festival, takes place, featuring numerous activities for children and stalls offering traditional Japanese delicacies.

Tip:
Weekends and holidays are best; there'll be a crowd for sure, but the festive cheer and stalls that are present offer a facet that you can't experience on a normal workday. Perhaps a second visit during working hours will suffice for that peaceful ambiance.
