Underground Main Square Museum, Krakow (must see)
Beneath Kraków's bustling market square rests the Rynek Underground Museum, an expansive subterranean marvel. Covering an area of approximately 4000 square meters, this museum project commenced in 2009 and came to fruition on September 24, 2010. Just three days later, on September 27, 2010, the main attraction, titled "Tracing Krakow's European Identity," was unveiled to the public.
This central exhibit, "Tracing Krakow's European Identity," employs a captivating blend of holographic projections, fog machines, and screens to transport visitors back in time to the Kraków of yore, nearly seven centuries ago. Among the captivating displays, you'll find the notable 693 kilograms medieval lead artifact nicknamed the "loaf," accompanied by an array of intriguing relics: historical artifacts from daily life, currency, statuettes, sculptures, games, weaponry, and tools. To enhance the experience, the exhibition boasts an interactive catalog featuring three-dimensional models of these relics, all accessible through user-friendly touchscreens.
Adjacent to the multimedia spectacle, and situated beneath the venerable Kraków Cloth Hall, lies a fascinating exploration of medieval passages. These passages can be observed through transparent walkways, offering a unique perspective on the medieval tracts that once thrived underfoot. This section of the museum proudly presents the remnants of bygone architectural wonders, including a meticulously reconstructed 12th-century workshop, remnants of a former aqueduct-based waterworks, vestiges of scorched settlements dating back to the eleventh century, a lifelike recreation of a medieval merchant's stall, and an enlightening map that delineates far-flung trade routes.
