Unitarian Church, Dover

The Unitarian Church in Dover, located on Adrian Street, is a historic testament to the spirit of dissent and the pursuit of spiritual freedom. Officially established in 1820, the church’s roots stretch back to 1643 when Baptist dissenters first met in the area. By 1655, they had constructed a meeting house, but with the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, they faced harsh persecution. Many early members were imprisoned in Dover Castle for their unorthodox interpretations of biblical teachings.

The current octagonal brick church reflects the congregation’s resilience and determination. After enduring damage during the Second World War, the chapel reopened in 1952, continuing its mission of fostering a diverse and inclusive community. In 1916, the church formally adopted Unitarian principles, emphasizing freedom of belief, reason, and tolerance.
