Vår Frälsares Kyrka (Church of Our Saviour), Malmo

Vår Frälsares Kyrka (Church of Our Saviour), Malmo

The Church of Our Saviour in Malmö is a modest yet striking structure, designed by architect Sar Hans Westman and consecrated in 1960. Due to limited finances, the church was constructed using accessible, local materials, which only adds to its charm. Its famous tower, adorned with mosaics, stands out as a significant feature of the building.

Originally, the parish, founded in 1870, had its church located at what is now Raoul Wallenberg Park, near Gustav Adolf's Square. The initial church, known as the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, had to change its name to Our Savior's Church to avoid being perceived as provocatively Catholic. Eventually, the growing parish needed a larger space, leading to the construction of the new church in Hästhagen.

Westman’s design evokes medieval architecture with its exterior resembling cobbled walls, low buildings, and an intimate, warm interior characterized by dark colors and textured walls. The parish, which consists of about 7,500 members, is a mosaic of cultures and languages, reflecting the universal essence of the Roman Catholic Church. Despite its humble materials, the church and its congregation remain a vibrant part of Malmö's Catholic community, offering various activities for all parishioners.
