Varna Zoo, Varna

Varna Zoo has been a beloved destination for families and animal enthusiasts since its opening in 1961. The zoo's origins date back to 1956 when sailors from a torpedo boat gifted a bear named Maxim, marking the beginning of what would become a diverse collection of wildlife. Today, the zoo is home to 72 different species of animals and birds, including ostriches, panthers, llamas, camels, lions, tigers, pink pelicans, and peacocks. The lush greenery and carefully designed habitats create a serene environment for both the animals and the visitors.

Varna Zoo is notable for its dedication to conservation, caring for 17 protected species listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria for endangered species. Among these protected inhabitants are a pair of black swans, a unique attraction as they are the only ones of their kind in Bulgaria. The zoo's commitment to providing naturalistic environments is evident in its water features, which include three cascading lakes. These lakes offer an ideal habitat for water birds, allowing visitors to observe their natural behaviors as they float and dive.

One of the zoo's more recent and popular additions is a pair of kangaroos, introduced to the facility in late 2007. These fascinating creatures have quickly become favorites among both children and adults. Varna Zoo continues to be a cherished part of the community, offering insights into wildlife and fostering a connection between visitors and the animal kingdom.
