Via Garibaldi (Garibaldi Street), Venice

In 1807, a significant transformation took place as the majority of the canal connecting the San Marco basin to the expansive northeastern inlet of the San Pietro canal was covered, giving birth to what is now known as Via Garibaldi. This bustling street, the widest in Venice, is a magnet for shoppers by day and a popular watering hole in the evening. Situated in the Castello neighborhood, which boasts some of the city's finest restaurants and bars, you'll immediately notice El Rèfolo by the lively crowd occupying its outdoor tables.

Via Garibaldi is also home to Venice's most renowned market, Mercatino delle Robe da Mar. Held multiple times a year, typically on the first or last Sunday of the month, this market offers a diverse array of items beyond its nautical name, ranging from antique stamps to used vinyl LPs.

You may also encounter a few spots of cultural and historical significance, such as the first house on the right, which once served as the residence of renowned explorers John and Sebastian Cabot, who embarked on voyages to Newfoundland and Paraguay during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Opposite the entrance to the tree-lined alley known as Giardini Garibaldi, the church of San Francesco di Paola showcases a painting by Giandomenico Tiepolo among the sequence on the cornice (second on the right), depicting scenes from the life of the eponymous saint.
