Victory Gate, Siem Reap
Victory Gate of Angkor Thom, located on the eastern side and north of the Gate of the Dead, is a remarkable and unique ancient structure that holds great historical and symbolic significance in Cambodia's Siem Reap region. While the other four gates of Angkor Thom are positioned on cardinal points, symbolizing a specific symmetry based on Hindu beliefs, Victory Gate stands apart by being on a non-secular axis with other important landmarks.
Approaching the Victory Gate, visitors are greeted by a stunning moat and a stone causeway, adorned with a grand naga railing that is being pulled by 54 stone giants, Asuras, and Devas. This intricate and fascinating design represents the constant struggle between good and evil, inspired by the Hindu myth of the 'Churning of the Sea of Milk.' Flanking either side of the gate's doorway, a trio of elephants can be seen pulling up lotus from the waters below with their trunks. Above the elephants, three figures are depicted.
Rising above the figures, a row of devata can be observed in prayer, leading to the four massive and beautifully carved faces pointing in each direction. These gigantic and enigmatic faces wear a diadem, a diamond shape on their forehead, and an ornate crown, adding to the awe-inspiring atmosphere of the Victory Gate. Above the faces, three towering prasats stand tall, with the central tower being the tallest and adorned with false levels, ornate lintels, and pediments before culminating in its lotus flower crown and spire. The entrances of the Victory Gate originally featured ornate pediments, with remnants still visible on the western side of the gate.
Interestingly, historical records from 1920 reveal that Victory Gate once featured "spurs," similar to those seen at the other four gates, further emphasizing its cultural and architectural significance.
