Villa Malfitano, Palermo

Villa Malfitano, Palermo

Nestled in the historic quarter of Politeama in Palermo, the Villa Malfitano Whitaker stands as a remarkable testament to 19th-century architecture and culture. Built between 1886 and 1889, the villa was originally the residence of Joseph Whitaker, an Anglo-Sicilian businessman, and his wife Tina. Designed by architect Ignazio Greco, the structure exemplifies a blend of Neo-Renaissance and Eclectic styles, making it a unique architectural feat.

The villa's interior is a showcase of artistic mastery, with state rooms adorned in rich floral trompe-l’oeil frescoes by Ettore De Maria Bergler. It also features Flemish tapestries depicting scenes from the Aeneid and additional frescoes by Rocco Lentini, coupled with stucco work by Salvatore Valenti. Spanning three floors, Villa Malfitano houses an extensive collection of artwork including furniture, paintings, ceramics, and 16th-century Flemish tapestries, all collected by Whitaker during his travels.

The villa is surrounded by a sprawling seven-acre garden designed by Emilio Kunzmann, which is home to an impressive array of rare plants from regions as diverse as Tunisia, Sumatra, Australia, and South America. The garden also boasts a botanical collection with over 150 species of orchids, underscoring the villa’s commitment to botanical excellence.

During its heyday in the Belle Époque era, Villa Malfitano was the epicenter of lavish gatherings, hosting notable figures such as composer Richard Wagner and members from the imperial dynasties of Great Britain, Germany, and Russia. Today, it serves as the headquarters of the Whitaker Foundation and continues to be a vibrant cultural hub, offering a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of its former inhabitants.

Currently, Villa Malfitano not only functions as a museum displaying its original collections but also hosts private events. Its proximity to the central Politeama theater enhances its accessibility and appeal, making it a prominent cultural landmark in Palermo.
