Vivint Smart Home Arena, Salt Lake City
Vivint Smart Home Arena, located in Salt Lake City, is an iconic sports and events venue with a rich history in professional athletics. Originally opening its doors in 1991 as the Delta Center, the arena was built to replace the smaller Salt Palace and designed as a modern, 20,000-seat home for the Utah Jazz of the NBA. Through the support and financing of Larry H. Miller, construction began in 1990, and the arena quickly became a central hub for major sporting events and concerts in Salt Lake City.
Over the years, the arena has undergone several name changes, with Delta Air Lines holding the initial naming rights until 2006. Following Delta's decision to end its contract, the arena became known as EnergySolutions Arena. In 2015, Provo-based home security company Vivint acquired the naming rights, giving the venue its current name.
In addition to being the home court of the Utah Jazz, Vivint Smart Home Arena has hosted a range of professional teams, including the WNBA's Utah Starzz, the Arena Football League's Utah Blaze, and various minor league hockey teams. Most recently, the arena welcomed the Utah Hockey Club, a new NHL team formed from the personnel of the Arizona Coyotes, with their inaugural game in October 2024 marking a new era for the arena and its fans.
The arena’s versatility was showcased during the 2002 Winter Olympics when it hosted figure skating and short track speed skating events as the "Salt Lake Ice Center." With a seating capacity of 18,306 for basketball, 56 luxury suites, and 668 club seats, the arena continues to draw large crowds and has hosted record-breaking minor league hockey games, including a 1996 Turner Cup Finals game with 17,381 fans.
Vivint Smart Home Arena remains a symbol of Utah’s sports culture, carrying forward the legacy of Larry H. Miller and embracing new chapters under the ownership of Ryan Smith. Today, it stands as a bustling center for both sports and entertainment in Salt Lake City.
