Wanuskewin Heritage Park, Saskatoon

Wanuskewin Heritage Park is an archaeological site and non-profit cultural center located just outside Saskatoon. The park's name comes from the Cree word "wanaskewin," which means "being at peace with oneself." This site is a National Historic Site of Canada because of its archaeological significance, showcasing almost 6000 years of Northern Plains peoples' history.

At least 70 different Nations have continuously lived or passed through this land. Not all of those Nations exist anymore; however, there are still many for whom Wanuskewin is a sacred and meaningful space.

In front of the park's main building, a small herd of bison sculptures stands, complementing the educational exhibits and galleries featuring indigenous artists' works inside. The center provides guided tours, hoop dancing lessons, and workshops on tipi construction and traditional art.

Visitors can explore the sacred grounds of Wanuskewin Heritage Park and even spend the night in a tipi. In 2019, in collaboration with Parks Canada, the park reintroduced bison to the land.

Six calves from Grasslands National Park, along with five from the United States, formed a herd at Wanuskewin. This herd has since grown with the birth of new calves. The reintroduction of bison aids in the species' recovery from near-extinction in the 1800s and contributes to the restoration of native grasses.

In 2016, Wanuskewin announced its intention to seek UNESCO World Heritage designation, which would make it the first World Heritage Site in Saskatchewan.
