War and Liberation Monument (Oorlogs- en Bevrijdingsmonument), Eindhoven

The War and Liberation Monument in Eindhoven is a solemn tribute to the sacrifices made during World War II. Unveiled in September 1954, this bronze sculpture was conceptualized by Paul Gregoire and stands as a poignant reminder of the war's impact.

At its center, the monument features three male figures, standing back-to-back with their heads bowed. These figures represent the citizen, the soldier, and the freedom fighter, embodying different aspects of the war experience. They are placed on a round muschelkalk (shell limestone) pedestal, which is adorned with four limestone tiles displaying embossed wartime imagery and an inscription honoring the importance of soldiers’ sacrifice.

The sculpture group measures 2.8 meters in height, 2.4 meters in width, and 2.1 meters in depth, while the pedestal itself stands at 1.02 meters high. A bronze torch, symbolizing remembrance, is placed in front of the figures, measuring 2.75 meters in height. Surrounding the monument is a tiled plateau made of concrete slabs, bordered by granite blocks inscribed with the names of Eindhoven’s war victims.

War and Liberation Monument serves as both a memorial and a place of reflection, ensuring that the stories of those who lived and died during the war are never forgotten.
