War Memorial Opera House, San Francisco

The War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco stands proudly on Van Ness Avenue, directly across from the iconic City Hall. It has been the cherished home of the San Francisco Opera since its grand opening in 1932. Additionally, it holds historical significance as the venue for the momentous San Francisco Conference, where the newly organized United Nations had its first assembly in April 1945.

In 1927, the city issued $4 million in municipal bonds to build the first municipally owned opera house in the US. Architects Arthur Brown Jr. and G. Albert Lansburgh designed the impressive structure, completed in 1932. It features a classic Roman Doric order with a striking colonnade, inspired by the Louvre Colonnade, honoring those who served in World War I.

In the grand lobby, visitors are welcomed by staircases with overlooks at each end leading to main level entrances on the left. Inside, a magnificent entrance hall awaits, featuring a high barrel-vaulted and coffered ceiling. Stunning views of the surroundings can be seen from the staircase landings. The theater boasts a massive aluminum and glass panel chandelier suspended under a captivating blue vault, with gilded figurative sculptures adorning the proscenium arch, adding elegance to the venue.

With seating for 3,146 people and additional standing room for 200 in the orchestra and balcony sections, the War Memorial Opera House stands as a testament to the city's love for the arts and its dedication to honoring those who have served in times of war.
