Weiwuying Metropolitan Park, Kaohsiung
Wei Wu Ying was originally a base for the Eighth Army Group, and after they moved, 47 hectares of the previous base were converted into a metropolitan park. The southern part of the park contains the South Lake, Summer Avenue, and a kids' play park, as well as a 3-building complex left from the original base. What was previously a parade ground and water tower has been converted into a scenic overlook, from which the whole park can be seen, and a viewing platform, a bike trail, and an expanse of grass have been added, allowing visitors to freely run, have picnics, fly kites, and take part in performance activities.
The park spans over an area of 47 hectares. It consists of lake, children playground and former barracks. On the north side of the park is the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts.
The Wei-Wu-Ying Metropolitan Park, a former military compound of 65 ha, which has been re-tasked by the Taiwanese Council for Cultural Affairs (CCA), is located in Kaohsiung- one of the world’s largest sea harbours. With a population of over five million people, the harbour city is looking to reinvent its face to the world, becoming a multifaceted city with a state-of-the-art service industry and a rich cultural life.
Weiwuying National Art and Culture Center is located in Fengshan, Kaohsiung, connected to Weiwuying Metropolitan Park. It includes: a 470-seat performance hall, a 1,240-seat theater, a 2000-seat concert hall and a 2,260-seat opera house. It is a rare large-scale performance center in Asia. Dutch architect Frank Houbin took the banyan tree as his inspiration to create a flowing free curve, where people can walk freely, creating a space where art and life are close to each other. ***PH***
