Wells Fargo Center, Denver

Wells Fargo Center, Denver

The Wells Fargo Center, a prominent skyscraper in Denver, is an iconic feature of the city's skyline. Standing at 698 feet (213 meters) tall with 52 stories, it is the third tallest building in Denver, following the Republic Plaza and 1801 California Street. The building, located on Lincoln Street, is also known by its former name, One Norwest Center, and is colloquially referred to as the "Cash Register Building" due to the distinctive curve of its uppermost floors, which resemble an antique cash register.

Designed by the renowned architect Philip Johnson under a master plan by I. M. Pei, the Wells Fargo Center was completed in 1983. The building was initially intended for a downtown area in Texas, which influenced its design, particularly the necessity of a heated roof to prevent snow from dangerously accumulating and sliding off the curved crown.

The Wells Fargo Center is connected via a skybridge to the Mile High Center at 1700 Broadway. This connection links the skyscraper to additional amenities, including a food court, a Starbucks, a small museum featuring artifacts and memorabilia from Wells Fargo's history, and the Downtown Denver branch of Wells Fargo Bank. Both buildings feature large atria constructed in the same unique cash register style.

In 2016, the building underwent a significant renovation led by Beacon Capital Partners, focusing on modernizing the lobby. The renovation included an 8-story digital art installation in the glass atrium, created by experience design firm ESI Design. The renovation also introduced new furniture, lighting, and art pieces, including 14 paintings and 5 sculptures by New York-based artist Enoc Perez. This renovation has helped maintain the Wells Fargo Center's status as a modern and visually striking landmark in Denver's architectural landscape.
